Multifocal glasses – what is it and how does it work

what is multifocal glasses

Multifocal glasses in Malaysia

What is multifocal glasses

Multifocal glasses, also known as progressive glasses is a type of glasses that consist of different prescription within the same pair of glasses. It helps wearer to see far such as driving and movie clearly as well as near such as reading easily.

It is getting popular in Malaysia. Many professionals and business people use multifocal glasses day in day out because it is really convenient and help them to see clearly.

multifocal glasses is essentially a pair of glasses with multiple prescriptions cater to shortsightedness, astigmatism and presbyopia (cannot read fine prints clearly)

It is useful for people of age 40 and above who have developed presbyopia (cannot see small words clearly) as it consists of reading power. You must have heard of another similar glasses called bifocal, where there is a line in between the lens.

Image below illustrates the difference between bifocal and multifocal. Multifocal come in one single piece without any line, it just looks like a normal glasses, while bifocal has a clear segment.

How does multifocal glasses work

Multifocal glasses, the name is pretty self explanatory, that is multiple focus points. Before we dive deeper into the multiple focus points fact, we need to understand that we need different power or prescription to view object of different distant.

For instant, if your short sightedness is -2.00, you need that power to view very far object. But do you realise that you can actually see computer screen even when you remove glasses? That has validated the point that you only need lower power to see near object.

Thus, multifocal consists of multiple focus points with different prescriptions. This is to cater adequate power for wearer to see object of different distances clearly. The image below illustrates the different level of prescription in the glasses.

structure of progressive lens

From the image, you can see that

  1. The top part is used to see far object
  2. The middle part is used to see intermediate object
  3. The bottom part is used to read book or phone messages

Now, you must be thinking

Why is it so complicated? Why are there 3 parts? Will it be difficult to wear?

You need to understand how the eyes work and where they focus when you look at different objects. Multifocal is designed in such a way is because after many years of research, lens expert find out that when human look at far object, we only see through the top part of the lens. When we are reading, we only see through the bottom part of the lens. And in between, we see through the middle part when we use our computer.

No, you do not need to keep adjusting the glasses just to utilise that part. Your eyes will adjust and fit in well.

how multifocal works

Who needs multifocal glasses?

Anyone with age of 40 and above will start to develop presbyopia. The symptoms of presbyopia are as follow :

  1. Have to remove existing glasses when you read phone message
  2. You extend phone a little further so that the messages get sharper
  3. You put on reading glasses when you read and remove it when you are not reading

Well, if any of these bothers you, you may want to consider multifocal glasses. It provides the convenience for you the see clearly without the hassle of changing or alternating glasses or changing the reading distance.

What to expect when you first started to wear multifocal glasses?

Until this point, you must be curious how does it feel to wear this multifocal glasses? Well, let’s assure you that it is not anything out of the world nor hard to wear. You can now see things clearly at all distances; smartphone fonts do not need to be enlarged nor stretching your hand even further to read.

  • Need to off glasses to read
  • Reading material has to be placed far away
  • Need to lift up the glasses to read WhatsApps
  • Need to bring reading glasses when you go out
  • Look old with all these actions

the basics of progressive lens

The multifocal lens design is so genius that it caters to the eyeball movement naturally. You do not need to worry about it. Having said so, in the beginning, it does take some time up to a week to get used to the glasses.

Within few days, you will get used to the glasses. Louis, the attendant of the day, was very professional. He was recommended a few glasses based on my face shape, lifestyle, preferences, etc and his selections were on point. He's thorough in taking my reading and he's precise when it comes to explanation. And just like the other attendant (whom I forgotten to ask for the name while I went to pick up/adjust the glasses), he's friendly.Overall, I had a pleasant experience here and would return for its great service. 👓

My visit here was my first time and I am very happy with their service. They were very thorough in their tests and took time to explain (in simple terms) which was important to me as someone who never wore specs before. The whole process was smooth and comfortable. And you know, when it's your first time for anything, you can get bit nervous and intimidated by the unknown. But I was put at ease by their personable and easygoing approach. They also took measurements of my face to suggest several frames (and I got compliments from my colleagues on my new look). More than happy to highly recommend this place.

Anti Blue Light Glasses

computer glasses for work

Anti blue light glasses is also know as computer glasses are gaining popularity in Malaysia. 4 out of 5 glasses wearers wear this type of glasses. You must have came across this type of glasses somewhere which lead you to this article. Here, rest assure that you will understand well about this type of glasses. We will share in depth on this blue light computer glasses using What, Why, How, Who and When.

1st generation computer glasses has blue coating on the surface of the lens which causes the blue reflection.

3rd generation computer glasses does not have that blue coating anymore and way more comfortable

What is anti blue light glasses

Blue light glasses or more specifically blue light lens is a type of lens that comes with an anti blue light coating on the surface of lens. It can come with prescription or without prescription. It can be cut and fit on any type of frame to turn into daily glasses.

Why do we use anti blue light glasses

The reason why blue light glasses is so popular nowadays is due to its ability to reflect away the harmful blue light from digital devices such as computer, laptop and smartphone. You know that UV is present under the sunlight, that is why wearing UV protected sunglasses helps to protect the eyes and prevent cataract. Same as UV, the blue light of wave length between 380nm to 453nm is present under sunlight. However, the intensity of the blue light from computer is so much higher that it could contribute to macular degeneration. The blue light can penetrate into the eyes and cause oxidation at the macular. Thus, it will be advisable to wear blue light glasses to prevent that from happening.

Anti blue light glasses also comes with slight yellowish tint which help to reduce the glare and improve contrast. Glaring screen can cause eye to get tired easily, so anti blue light glasses will come in handy to reduce tiring eyes.

How does it work

The blue coating (1st gen) or purplish/greenish coating (3rd gen) on the surface of the lens will reflect the harmful blue light from entering our eyes. This does not mean we will never see blue color after wearing the glasses. After all the wavelength of visible blue color and harmful blue light are different. The photo below illustrates how it works.

reflect blue light
Anti blue light computer glasses reflects away harmful blue light

5 hours of computer usage can be tiring to the eyes

Who should use anti blue light glasses

Anyone who uses computer or smartphone for more than 5 hours should consider using anti blue light glasses. Such long hour of exposure the computer light is not good for the eyes. So, why not protect your eyes by wearing this computer glasses?

For people with short or long sightedness, you can opt for the additional coating on top of the prescription lens. It cost between RM395 to RM595 for the whole set. For people who do not have eye sight problem but use computer a lot, you can buy the zero power one.

When should you wear it

You can wear it all the time. It does not affect your power. In fact, since the usage of electronic devices are getting more intense than ever, having your eyes protected from the blue light lens will be good. If you are facing laptop the whole day, you’re high recommended to wear the glasses rather than contact lens.

The yellowish tint helps to improve vision contrast will come handy under low light condition. So you may also want to wear this glasses when you’re driving at night.

Be good looking and protective at the same time!

The best part about this glasses is that you can use all kind of frame design to turn them into anti blue light computer glasses. You can check our cool collections here.

You can also make an appointment for an eye test and get consultation on blue light glasses at our outlets.

Types of Progressive Lenses in 2020

different types of progressive lens malaysia

Types of Progressive Lenses: How many types of these eyeglasses are there?Progressive glasses and multifocal glasses are the same. The words are interchangeable in this article.

Intro – Types of progressive lenses

Progressive lens are “multifocal” lenses that offer a smooth progression of several lens powers for very optimised vision across the region. They are usually near distance being at the bottom and far distance viewing at the top part of the lens. You will be able to understand the special characteristics associated with every design by observing how progressive lens are made. Before that, let us introduce the structure or design of a progressive lens.

for progressive lenses pros cons

There are 4 major parts on the lens.

  1. Green : Distance Vision
  2. Yellow : Intermediate Vision
  3. Red : Near Vision
  4. Blue : Blurred area

When multiple prescriptions are compressed into a single piece of lens, there will be distorted or blurred area (the blue area). Wearer will find that the vision is wavy and distorted. A better design lens has wide yellow area also know as the corridor and less distorted area. At the relax mode, when wearer looks far, the eyes will see through the green area. When wearer is doing desk job such as computer or paper work, he or she will see through the yellow area. Lastly, during reading, the eyes will actually look down instead of the entire head moving down. Point to note: this is actually how our eyes move.

We purposely place different prescription at different position to help the eyes. So the key to comfortable vision depends on the precision of the prescription and the design. Now that we have explained the structure, let us see how one progressive lens varies from another.

Point to note: when we talk about better design, we mean:

  1. Smoother transition from distant power to reading power thus reducing waviness
  2. Wider corridor to allow more stable vision

Traditional progressive glasses

One of the old forms in the types of progressive lenses. This form of lenses makes use of semi-finished lens which will are molded with virtually no cylinder (spherical power) at the front. Instead, the particular spherical power will be added at the backside of the lens. However, this sort of progressive lens are becoming obsolete because it isn’t accurate since there are other better choices available where the specific corridors are narrower (the part of the lenses associated with power that corrects your vision).

Digital progressive lenses

This type of progressive lenses designs gives the most optimum view where the particular wearer’s optical needs are taken into consideration in the designing process. The particular difference between digital progressive and traditional progressive lens is digital’s capability to do custom areas within a lens, tailor to an individual’s needs. Digital progressive lenses make sure that the most precise prescription can be tailored according to a person’s face, plus how do you wear your glasses as well as the position of your eye.

The latest types of progressive lenses are digital free-form type. As long as it is available at the glasses store you visit, the opticians will definitely recommend it because they come along with huge benefits.

  1. Custom made individually
  2. Made exclusively for you based on your eyeball viewing habits and viewing patterns

Think about tailor-made coats that fit perfectly.

These lens are particularly tailored uniquely for one prescription, together with frame sizes and position-of-wear. All the points are designed precisely to result in smooth prescription progression and minimise distortion. Besides, since the same spectacle frames may sit higher on one’s face, and lower on someone else’s, we will need to obtain accurate measurements in order to maximise eyesight comfort and optical experience. Digital free-form progressives glasses also offer broader and much more accurate channels plus corridors, which implies that you’ll have better peripheral vision. Besides this, digital free-form progressives also have the particular technology to decrease the particular blurriness around the edges the peripheral view.

Best Progressive Lenses / Best Multifocal Glasses

In determining which is the best progressive lenses or multifocal, we have to look into few attributes i.e. lens coating, visual field, intermediate vision, reading comfort, distortion and adaptation. In terms of lens coating, Hoya has one of the most durable coating called High Vision Long Life (HVLL). It has extremely good scratch resistance coating and comes with two years warranty. For visual field, intermediate vision and reading comfort, we are talking about the lens design. As the power progresses, clear visual field gets narrower. Thus, to determine which lens is better, we need to factor in these 3 attributes. Same as distortion and adaptation, better lens has better vision stability and easier to wear. So back to the topic, for the best progressive lens or best multifocal glasses, we choose these 3 namely Hoya MyStyle, Carl Zeiss Individual 2 and Essilor Varilux S Series.

Summing up

Progressive lenses may seem complicated and cause the feeling of discomfort. However, expectation can be met with proper explanation and measurement. Progressive glasses make wearing glasses more convenient for wearer. Concerned about the price? You can find out more about the range of progressive lenses here. Multifocal glasses, want to get a spare pair

pros and cons of progressive lens

“ I want to get a spare pair for multifocal but not an expensive one ”If this is you, we have solutions for you. Read on to find out more.

Multifocal Glasses

Compared to others who have not tried multifocal before, you have a better understanding on how multifocal work. You should be happy that you’re now used to wearing one, and thanks for willing to try. If you have not tried multifocal or progressive lens, here is a comprehensive introduction to multifocal that helps you to understand the concept better.

structure of progressive lens

progressive lens has different power at different part of the lensBack to the topic, a backup or spare pair that is less expensive. Before we dive deeper in this, let’s determine what factors determine the comfort of a multifocal.

  1. Power difference between reading and distant
  2. Astigmatism
  3. Lens design

As you have experience, you utilize the top part of multifocal to see distant object such as driving and watching movie; you utilize the bottom part for reading such as whatapps and books. All can be done in one single lens, that actualy means the power changes from “far to near”The bigger the power difference, the more it has to progress within the lens. Imagine squeezing 100 power difference and 300 power difference, the 300 one will be less comfortable.Astigmatism is one of the main culprit that cause dizziness, be it single vision (normal glasses) or multifocal. Reason being the nature of astigmatism is actualy cylindrical spheric, meaning the power at a certain angle can be exceptionally high(oblique astigmatism error). Such thing if combine with multifocal can reduce the comfortness. When we talk about lens design, we mean the corridor. As an avid multifocal wearer, you know this more than anyone else that the clear part of the lens is limited to the center. A better design (more expensive lens) will have a wider corridor thus reducing the distortion and waviness.

different types of progressive lens malaysia

how do we tell which progressive lens is better than the other

  1. Frame size

Frame size determine the size of the lens which also affect the overall wearing experience. Larger frame normally has more distortion but this can be subjective too. Bearing all the factors in mind, it makes sense to choose multifocal that is quite close to existing design. If the power and astigmastism remain the same, frame size does not differ by a lot, try to get the lens that is of similar or just one step lower range. Why do we say so?Multifocal is very much about relative wearing experience. Basically there are 4 category (depends on how one optician categorise it or some do not) namely entry, standard, premium and personalised. Entry is good for low power and young wearer below 45 while personalised is especially good for you who want minimal distortion and best wearing experience.Say your current pair is a premium design which you paid more than a grand for that. If you are comfortable with the vision, for your backup pair, it’s not advisable to get an entry level design because it is relatively uncomfortable. You may spend way lesser maybe around RM500 for that but you may not feel comfortable at all. In the end of the day, you did not save for buying a cheaper multifocal, instead, you have wasted RM500 because it does not serve your purpose. However, if you’re current pair is the standard design, getting entry level may be fine because comfort difference is relatively low. There will now be another question that’s in your mind :“why did my optician recommend me a premium design, making me not able to use entry design as a backup?”Please don’t get him or her wrong. When prescribing multifocal, we look into a lot of factors, the 4 mentioned earlier are just few of them. Lifestyle, age, working habit etc need to be taken into consideration. But hey, you’re able to wear that pair comfortably. After reading this post, you are now more informed on how to choose for your backup pair of multifocal. Disclaimer : This is not the only way in choosing multifocal or the absolute way, but rather a comprehensive guide for you to be more informed. Programs for World Vision Day 2017

World Vision Day 2017

Last Wednesday and Thursday were the two most hectic yet meaningful days for Pott Glasses this year. Since it was in conjunction with World Vision Day 2017 which was scheduled on this week, we had a lot of activities and work to be constructed.

On Wednesday, we went for a radio interview with AiFM to raise awareness about eye care in honor of World Vision Day 2017. Undeterred by which it meant to have to wake up early and getting stuck in the traffic, we viewed it as part and parcel of our job, a calling from our inner heart to share about eye care with the public. When we first received the invitation from the radio, we have this wavering thoughts whether we actually fit for such a huge honor. Nevertheless we perceived it as a challenge to voice out to the public on the fundamental issue regarding eye care which is usually neglected.

Many of us took our eyes for granted. We pay less attention to it but not as much as towards our health while the fact is both of them need equal amount of respect, care and focus. 8 consecutive hours on digital devices, bad reading habit of under low light condition and smoking are just few of the bad routines which are actually detrimental to the eyes. In the interview we deeply conversed on vision impairment such as glaucoma, macular degeneration and also vision disorder where extra care need to be attended in order to fully combat them. We also gave out advices on healthy food and lifestyle that should be practiced. It turned out the outcome of the interview went beyond than we expected. We received quite a number of phone calls after the interview, which literally meant that we had achieved our objective through the talk. The feeling is rather, very fulfilling.

aifm radio interview

The next day is the actual day of World Vision Day. We held a collaboration with Pejabat Daerah Dan Tanah Seremban to provide eye check to the school students and underprivileged community in Mantin, Negeri Sembilan. Named as “Program Jom Bantu Rakyat – Cermin Mata Percuma 2017”, it led by Puan Marhizah. We were informed about the named program a week before.

We had done a similar program in the past but what really strikes me this time round is how poor is the eye sight of the elderlies and how they are badly unaware about their deteriorating eyesight. There was this lady in particular that endlessly caught my attention. When she staggered in with her current glasses on, I could barely exchange an eye contact with her. Since it was because she wore a high power lens that resulted in high refraction which consequently overlay the eyes, making her eyes to appear much smaller. It turned out that her power is more than -20.00 or two thousand in layman term when I performed auto-ref scan. Just to give a reference of how high the power is compared to the norm, normal short sightedness ranges from -1.00 to -8.00. Clearly -20.00 is way out of the chart.

To make things worse, her visual acuity was way too below the benchmark. Visual acuity is one perimeter that I emphasized a lot in performing eye test. Basically it is a benchmark of measuring clarity, 1.0 being the perfect eye sight and anything below will make the sight blurry. Her vision with current glasses is only 0.1, that is 10% of the perfect eye sight. My job is to make sure that her vision is sharper than before. After a long session of subjective refraction, I only managed to push it to 0.3. Looking at her, I reflected a lot; without program like this she might hardly get her eye examined, not to mention getting a new pair of glasses since it would be extremely expensive to match her power. She is one of the reason why we are actively trying to reach out for the underprivileged in the suburb community. I couldn’t thank enough the parties for such a meaningful initiative. This lady will definitely get a better vision because of the program.

The eye test program started at 9am and ended at 5pm. Together with my team and the help from Pejabat Daerah dan Tanah Seremban and SMK Mantin, we were able to perform eye test for over 80 students. Out of that, 72 of them were confirmed needed glasses.

These two days really made me sat down and analyzed a lot about my job as an optician. The contentment to be able to help those with eyesight difficulties is like no other. We sometimes are too occupied with wanting to rapidly grow our business that we forget the true purpose of the business. I would like to thank all the parties for engaging us and allowing us to improve the living quality of others by improving their vision. And this has always been Pott Glasses’ mission.

Eye exercise for better and healthier eyes by Pott Glasses

eye exercise

Eye exercise

is important in maintaining eye health. Similar to all other exercises that we commonly do such as running, swimming, gym etc that bring benefits to our body, eye exercise is definitely beneficial to our eyes. Basically the idea of doing eye exercise is to allow eye to work well and stretch eye muscle.

There are few eye exercises that we do do easily without any usage of equipment.

First : turn the eyes in different directions. This is analogous to stretching that we usually do, be it for the hamstring, calfs, shoulder and so on. The steps are simple and explained as the caption of the graphics.

Second : Eye massage

More often than not, we overuse our eyes. We spend more than 8 hours in front of computer and desk job, and another 4 hours with phone before going to sleep. Some who do not get 8 hours of sleep will definitely feel exhausted. As much as your body need to rejuvenate, your eyes too need a proper massage! Here are 7 points where you can gently massage and press on when you feel tired. Go one full round when you feel tired, trust us, you will feel much better! You can do it after a long meeting, halfway to your long journey drive or anytime when you feel like doing it.

Gentle press on these points promote better blood circulations around the eyes.

eye massage points

Third : Good habit and lifestyle

Undeniably the living pace is getting faster every day. Tonnes of work piled up waiting to be done. This leads to longer working hour and continuous staring at desk job. Furthermore, there are many who do not have enough rest; it is not only detrimental to the body, it also hurt the eyes.

Contact lens wearers tend to wear the lens longer than the recommended hours ie 8 hours. To make things worse, many do not follow the hygienic protocol of wearing contact lens. All these unhealthy lifestyles are harmful to the eyes. Thus, here are some proper habits to practice so as to take care of the eyes.

eye care

One thing to note : rubbing the eyes can cause the rise of astigmatism; it should be prohibited. Should you experience itchiness or tired eyes, you can massage the eyes as shown above. You should also stay away from using the phone under low light condition and before sleep. Not only that it will affect your sleeping cycle, it may also cause blindness.

To conclude, one should not take the eyes for granted. After all, we have only two pairs of eyes and the eyes are irreplaceable. Although the advancement in medical may help to cure certain vision disorder or impairment, as the saying goes, prevention is better than cure.

If you find that the article is useful, please share it around.

Eye accommodation

eye structure

To see an image, the light has to fall on the retinal area to form an image and send signal to our brain. In order to ensure that the light falls on the retinal area, there are two parts of our eyes that will work together. First is our cornea, and second is the crystalline lens behind our cornea.

Prescription eyewear

Here, we would like to introduce the idea of power or prescription. We know that:

  • if we have short sightedness we have a power of -2.00D or -5.00D
  • if we have long sightedness we have a power of maybe +2.00D or +5.00D.

  • the cornea has a power of -17.00D and
  • the crystalline lens has a power of -45.00D.

The 2 parts ensure the correct combination of power so that the light falls on the retinal area to form image.

  • The cornea power is fixed
  • The crystalline lens is the one with flexible power which changes based on the thickness.

It is not practical to move the distance between your target and the object that you want to see. There is where crystalline lens play role.

Thickness of the crystalline lens will be adjusted automatically according to the distance of the target.

Eye Pain. Protect eyes from computer.

Crystalline lens will become thick when see near target and thin when see far target. However, the fluctuation of the thickness of the crystalline lens become very frequent due to the usage of the electronic screens especially computer screens.

Your crystalline lens get fatigue due to the long hours usage of the screens. Your eye muscles is being strained too much to change and maintain the thickness of the crystalline lens.

#1: The basics of progressive lenses

A progressive lens is a stunning bit of design with science, permitting numerous vision fields to be joined into a solitary lens with no obvious separating line between the fields themselves. The reason progressive lenses are regularly called “no-line” bifocals or trifocals is because the optical “power” of the lenses changes “progressively” from far distance to moderate-near distance and to reading distance. You may consider progressive lenses no-line bifocals, but they are quite different. Progressives make the change between solutions for eyesight much smoother, eradicating that noticeable line between eyewear prescriptions. This innovation causes the wearer to see better in many situations. Read Now: The basics of progressive lenses Malaysia

How do progressive lenses work? Read this guide and find out whether its good or not before you buy progressive lenses in Malaysia.

Previously in this Malaysia glasses guide, we learnt what is presbyopia and the cure for it is using progressive lenses technology. But what is meant by progressive lens glasses? How it works? And at the end, what is the progressive lens price in Malaysia?

Intro – Progressive Lenses

Presbyopia is a common old age problem because the crystallised lens behind the cornea simply cannot flex or squeeze itself during focusing in near reading distance.

So to counter that, we will need a lens for near range focusing, essentially a lens for reading, then when we look far, it will be blur! So now you’ll either remove your glasses or change to a pair of reading glasses, troublesome!

Presbyopia happens to everyone when we get old.

How do progressive lenses work?

What is meant by progressive glasses? A progressive lens is an amazing product of engineering, allowing a number of vision fields that can be incorporated directly into one piece of individual lens, with no borders or lines of variation within the fields themselves.

The specific power inside the lenses “progressively” changes from far to moderate-near for your full reading power. For this reason progressive lens are usually often called “no-line” bifocals , trifocals or more popularly known as multifocals.

An individual should think of progressive lenses like no-line bifocals or multifocal lenses. The general idea is that progressive lens consist of two distinctive prescription ie for distant which is located slightly above the center of the lens and reading at the bottom of the lens.

Progressive technology make the transition between the two prescriptions on lens much smoother & softer. Otherwise we will end up with bifocal where the transition is not smooth and we have a line separating the two prescriptions.

This technology helps you see much better in more instances as well as intermediate object such as computer work and speedometer in car.

Progressive lenses help you feel more natural looking from far to near!

What is meant by progressive glasses

Progressive lenses let several eyesight vision fields merge into just one lens. So rather than a cut and paste of several lenses, this technology “progressively” changes distance (far range), suitable for medium distance viewing range (like driving), and the close distance (reading range).

Summing up

Progressive lenses can work wonders for many Malaysians living in the digital age. When a person is wearing a progressive lens glasses, they generally described the experience as one glasses that solve all the problems.
